Who We ARE
Gateway Centre for Learning helps adults build reading, writing, math, and technology skills they need to live, learn, and work. We provide personalized support in a welcoming, supportive environment, meeting learners where they are and tailoring programs to individual needs.
Our programs include one-on-one tutoring, small group workshops, independent learning, technology coaching, proctoring services, and partnership programs. With the support of our dedicated staff and volunteers, we give adults the practical skills and confidence to achieve their goals.
Our Vision:
A community where everyone has the opportunity to develop the literacy skills to live, learn and work.
Our Mission:
To teach reading, writing, math, and digital skills in a manner that meets individual needs.
History
Gateway Centre for Learning began with a small group of community members who loved to read. They noticed that too many people in their community couldn’t, and they wanted to change that. So they started tutoring one-on-one, right at a kitchen table in someone’s home. As their efforts grew, this small initiative became official with the founding of the Midland Area Reading Council (MARC) on June 1, 1982.
For years, MARC focused on teaching adults to read and write through one-on-one tutoring. But as times changed, the community needed more. The organization expanded to include math, computer skills, employment training, and life skills. In 2012, the name was changed to Gateway Centre for Learning to better reflect the wide range of services now offered.
Today, Gateway Centre for Learning has grown well beyond that kitchen table. Located in downtown Midland, dedicated staff and volunteers work together to help people improve their skills through programs and services like Get SET (Skills, Education, and Training), Technology Coaching for Seniors, small group workshops, and more.
While we no longer meet around a kitchen table, the spirit that started this organization remains the same with a commitment to helping people in our community better their lives.
