Tutoring
Overview
Gateway Centre for Learning supports adults in building stronger reading, writing, math, and digital skills. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with learners to help them reach personal goals and gain the confidence needed to succeed in everyday life.
Experience
You don’t need previous teaching experience to become a tutor. What matters most is a willingness to help, listen, and work alongside someone as they build new skills.
Commitment
Tutoring sessions are arranged between the tutor and learner and are typically 1–2 hours long, once or twice per week. A minimum one-year commitment is preferred to help build a strong, supportive learning relationship.
Training Provided
We provide tutor training where you’ll learn practical strategies and get resources for supporting adult learners in a positive and effective way.
Qualities of a Good Tutor
We are looking for volunteers who are dependable, patient, and genuinely interested in helping others learn. Good tutors are friendly, open-minded, non-judgmental, and comfortable listening and communicating with learners. Flexibility, optimism, and a sense of humour are always welcome.
